Answer key โ Technology (Set 1)
- C. JavaScript โ JavaScript adds interactivity to web pages, such as menus, form checks, games and live updates. HTML provides the structure of a page and CSS its style. JavaScript runs in every major browser, and with Node.js it can also run on servers. It is unrelated to Java despite the name.
- C. Python โ Guido van Rossum, a Dutch programmer, created Python, first released in 1991. He named it after the British comedy group Monty Python, not the snake. Python is known for clear, readable code and is now one of the most popular languages, especially for data science and AI.
- B. MySQL โ MySQL was originally developed by the Swedish company MySQL AB, first released in 1995. It is named after My, the daughter of co-founder Michael Widenius. Sun bought MySQL AB in 2008, and Oracle acquired it with Sun in 2010. Quizlino's database runs on MySQL.
- A. Encryption โ Encryption protects information by converting it into an unreadable form that only someone with the right key can unlock. WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, so only the sender and receiver can read messages, not even WhatsApp. Strong encryption keeps online payments safe.
- B. Network interface card โ A network interface card (NIC) connects a computer to a wired network, usually through an Ethernet port. Each NIC has a unique MAC address. Most modern motherboards have a NIC built in, and Wi-Fi adapters are the wireless version.
- A. grep โ grep searches for text inside files in Linux. For example, 'grep error log.txt' shows every line containing 'error'. The name comes from 'global regular expression print'. Ken Thompson wrote it for Unix in 1973. Adding '-r' searches through whole folders.
- C. HTTPS โ HTTPS is the protocol for securely browsing websites. It is HTTP with encryption (TLS), shown by a padlock in the address bar. It protects passwords and payment details from being read in transit. Google Chrome marks plain HTTP sites as 'Not secure'.
- B. pwd โ pwd stands for 'print working directory' and shows the full path of the folder you are currently in on Linux or macOS, such as /home/user/documents. It is useful when navigating with cd (change directory) and ls (list files) to know exactly where you are.
- A. Solidity โ Solidity is the main language for writing smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain. Smart contracts are programs that run automatically when conditions are met, such as releasing payment once goods arrive. Solidity was proposed in 2014 by Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum.
- A. Python โ Python is the main language for data analysis, using libraries such as Pandas for tables, NumPy for numbers and Matplotlib for charts. Pandas was created by Wes McKinney in 2008. Python's simple syntax makes it popular with scientists and analysts who are not full-time programmers.
- A. MAC address โ A MAC (Media Access Control) address identifies a device by its unique hardware address on a network card. It looks like 00:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E, and the first half identifies the manufacturer. Routers use MAC addresses on local networks, while IP addresses route data across the internet.
- A. Autoscaling โ Autoscaling automatically increases or decreases computing resources based on demand. For example, a shopping site may add servers during a big sale and remove them afterwards, saving money. Cloud platforms like AWS, Azure and Google Cloud offer autoscaling.
- C. Ransomware โ Ransomware encrypts a victim's files and demands payment, often in cryptocurrency, to restore them. The 2017 WannaCry attack hit hospitals and companies in over 150 countries. Regular offline backups are the best defence, because files can be restored without paying.
- A. chmod โ chmod ('change mode') changes file permissions in Linux. Permissions control who can read (r), write (w) and execute (x) a file. For example, 'chmod 755 script.sh' lets the owner do everything and others read and run it. chown changes a file's owner instead.
- A. NAT โ NAT (Network Address Translation) lets many devices with private IP addresses share one public IP address. Your home router uses NAT so all your phones and laptops can use the internet through a single address from your ISP. NAT helped delay the shortage of IPv4 addresses.
- B. git clone โ git clone creates a full copy of a remote repository on your computer, including all files, branches and history. For example, 'git clone https://github.com/user/project.git' downloads a project from GitHub. It is usually the first command when starting work on an existing project.
- A. Storing and accessing computing resources over the internet โ Cloud computing means storing and accessing computing resources, such as storage, servers, databases and software, over the internet instead of on your own computer. You pay for what you use. Google Drive, Netflix and online banking all rely on cloud computing.
- B. Patching โ Patching means regularly updating software to fix security weaknesses and bugs. Attackers often exploit known flaws in unpatched systems; the 2017 WannaCry ransomware spread through computers missing a Windows patch released months earlier. Microsoft releases monthly security updates on 'Patch Tuesday'.
- B. Symmetric Encryption โ Symmetric encryption uses the same key to encrypt and decrypt data. It is fast and used for large amounts of data; AES is the most common symmetric algorithm. The challenge is sharing the key safely, so it is often combined with asymmetric encryption, which uses a public and private key pair.
- A. MicroLED โ MicroLED displays use tiny, self-emitting LEDs for each pixel, made from inorganic materials. Like OLED, they give perfect blacks, but they are brighter, last longer and do not suffer burn-in. However, they are still very expensive to manufacture, so they appear mainly in giant premium TVs.
