Answer key – Sports (Set 1)
- B. Brazil – Brazil hosted the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, the first Olympic Games held in South America. India won two medals there: P. V. Sindhu took silver in badminton and Sakshi Malik won bronze in wrestling. The USA topped the medal table.
- B. The Masters – The Masters is played every year at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA. It is the only one of golf's four majors played at the same course every year. The course is famous for its flowering azaleas and a tough stretch of holes called 'Amen Corner'.
- A. Five-for – A five-for (or five-wicket haul) is when a bowler takes five or more wickets in a single innings. It is a major achievement, and at Lord's in London, bowlers who take five wickets get their names on an honours board. Anil Kumble once took all ten wickets in an innings against Pakistan in 1999.
- C. 1500 metres Freestyle – The 1500 metres freestyle is the longest race held in an Olympic pool, 30 lengths of the 50 m pool. Swimmers in the 10 km marathon swim compete in open water instead. Katie Ledecky of the USA has dominated the women's 1500 m freestyle.
- B. England – England, with matches also in Wales, hosted the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. England won it in a dramatic final at Lord's against New Zealand, decided on boundary count after both the match and the Super Over were tied. Ben Stokes was the hero of the final.
- B. Home Run – A home run in baseball is when a batter hits the ball out of the park in fair territory, letting them run around all four bases and score. Babe Ruth made the home run famous in the 1920s. If the bases are loaded, it is called a grand slam and scores four runs.
- C. Starting Line – The starting line is the line that sprinters must not cross before the starting signal. Their fingers rest just behind it in the 'set' position. If a runner moves too soon, it is a false start; since 2010, a single false start disqualifies the athlete.
- B. Artistic Gymnastics – The uneven bars are an apparatus in women's artistic gymnastics. They have two bars set at different heights, and gymnasts swing, release and fly between them. Nadia Comăneci scored the first perfect 10 in Olympic gymnastics on the uneven bars in 1976.
- B. Rhythmic Gymnastics – Rhythmic gymnastics uses five apparatus: ribbon, hoop, ball, clubs and rope. Gymnasts combine dance, flexibility and handling of the apparatus to music. It has been an Olympic sport since 1984. Unlike artistic gymnastics, it is performed only by women at the Olympics.
- B. 15.25 cm – The official height of a table tennis net is 15.25 cm (6 inches). The table itself is 2.74 m long, 1.525 m wide and 76 cm high. Table tennis became an Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Games. India's Manika Batra has been a top player.
- B. 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycle, 10 km run – The standard Olympic triathlon is a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km cycle and a 10 km run, done one after another without stopping. The time spent changing between sports, called transitions, counts towards the total. Triathlon joined the Olympics at Sydney 2000.
- B. Slip – The slip is the close-catching position beside the wicketkeeper on the off side. Slip fielders wait for edges off the bat. There can be several slips (first slip, second slip and so on), and the position next to them is gully. Nothing in cricket is directly behind the keeper except the long stop in old-style cricket.
- C. 50 meters – An Olympic swimming pool is 50 metres long, usually 25 m wide with 10 lanes, of which 8 are used in races. A 100 m race is two lengths. Olympic pools must be at least 2 m deep. Races in shorter 25 m pools are called 'short course'.
- B. Deuce – In tennis, a score tied at 40–40 is called deuce. From deuce, a player must win two points in a row to win the game: the first gives them 'advantage', and the second wins the game. The word comes from the French 'à deux', meaning 'two more points needed'.
- C. Japan – Japan is the birthplace of sumo wrestling, its national sport. Sumo has roots in Shinto religious rituals over 1,500 years old. Wrestlers try to push their opponent out of a circular ring or make any part of them other than the soles of the feet touch the ground. The top rank is yokozuna.
- C. Squash – Squash is played inside a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball. The ball must be warmed up to bounce properly. Squash began at Harrow School in England around 1830. India's Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal have been among the country's top players.
- B. Cycling – The Tour de France is a cycling race, held every July since 1903. Riders cover about 3,500 km over three weeks, with 21 stages including tough mountain climbs in the Alps and Pyrenees. The overall leader wears the famous yellow jersey, the maillot jaune.
- C. Ryder Cup – The Ryder Cup is contested between golf teams from Europe and the United States every two years. Unlike most golf events, there is no prize money; players compete for national pride. Matches are played as foursomes, four-balls and singles over three days.
- C. Africa Cup of Nations – The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is contested by African national football teams. First held in 1957, it is organised by CAF. Egypt has won it the most times, seven. Players such as Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané have starred in recent tournaments.
- B. Paris–Roubaix – Paris–Roubaix is nicknamed 'The Hell of the North'. It is a one-day race through northern France, famous for its rough cobbled sections, which often cause crashes and punctures. The winner receives a cobblestone as a trophy. It was first held in 1896.
